The future of Fortnite and how it’s changing Epic in games™ 199

It’s taking over the world. It’s turning Twitch streamers into superstars. It’s turning the shooter world on its head. But how is Fortnite changing the developer who made it and how did it find its success in the first place? That’s what we wanted to find out in games™ 199, on sale now.

The Future Of Fortnite

It’s been fascinating to watch the evolution of Epic in recent years. The team best known for making Gears Of War in recent memory has shown a willingness to adapt and pivot of late that belies its size and influence. As the maker of the Unreal Engine, it remains one of the most influential and important companies in the business, but the way it has supported and experimented with Fortnite feels more like an upstart new indie outfit. So, it was a great pleasure to catch up with both the development team behind Fortnite and some of Epic’s bigwigs, like founder Tim Sweeney, to find out how this has all come about and what comes next (beyond the recent release of Fortnite on mobile). You can read all about it in the new issue.

Jurassic World Evolution

We couldn’t have asked for a better developer to make a fully-featured PC adaptation of Jurassic Park as a strategy game than Frontier and it turns out that Universal felt similarly, as we found out when we got the chance to take a closer look at the game recently and chat with the developer. What was particularly good to see was how the chaos of running a park full of dinosaurs is just as present as the minutiae of theme park management. The tactical view that gets you up close and personal with your exhibits is a great touch too and we get into it all in our feature.

Nintendo Labo

Just what is Nintendo delivering with this cardboard cutout peripherals system? We wanted to take one last look before it launched and give you insight into just how much it has to offer. Hopefully it comes as little surprise to learn there’s a lot more to it than some minigames and cardboard that needs folding together. There’s a full game-making suite in their if you want to make things of your own.

Knights And Bikes

We’ve had our eye on Foam Sword’s debut release for some time and were delighted to catch up with Rex Crowle and Moo Yu to find out how they came to work together, the inspiration behind their childhood RPG, how it was influenced by both the games they played growing up and the universal experience of growing up in a small town, and so much more. This is one of the most beautiful and fun indies on the horizon and we delve into it all this issue.

Bandai’s Mobile Revolution

If we’re being completely honest, new Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto and Sword Art Online games coming to mobile devices isn’t usually the kind of thing that has us poking our heads out from the games™ fox hole, but then it’s not usual for such games to be tapping into one of the biggest networks in the world as Bandai Namco is doing with Google. The promise, with Dragon Ball Legends, is an online fighter for mobile that has the most solid and consistent connections possible. This is cutting edge mobile tech and it’s all in service of Goku and Co. You can read all about this incredible turn of events with word from the Bandai teams behind the games and Google in the new issue.

Access

Another packed Access section as we take a closer look at one of Microsoft’s few, but very intriguing exlcusives in State Of Decay 2, dare to dream that Mutants: Day Zero could be a stellar new XCOM successor, ponder the wide array of Switch Indies we’re going to be playing this year and reflect on the past and present of Soulcalibur’s heroes as its sixth edition prepares to reboot the story. There’s all that and more this issue.
